CHARITIES

For 2022 we welcome FOUR charities: Music Therapy, based at Poole Child Development Centre; Moordown Day Centre; Dorset Children's Foundation; and Hope for Food.  We look forward to singing joyfully for them.

Music Therapy

This is based at the Child Development Centre in Poole, who reach out to disadvantaged children through music.

Music therapy encourages children to participate and become involved in music making, in whatever way they can and at their individual level, in order to support early language development, interaction, physical skills/movement and confidence. The therapy uses improvised music making, familiar songs and instrumental activities. It may also incorporate the use of music to support sensory needs.

At the moment this therapy is only able to function one day per week.

Moordown Plus - Specialist Dementia Service

This is a day centre for dementia patients and their families at all stages of their journey. Although monies are received from the council, it does not cover any activities, many of which provide a better quality of time for those visiting the centre.

The new Moordown Centre offers a dementia-friendly environment with a dementia quiet room, safe outside patio area and themed rooms.  It supports local people and provides a stimulating and supportive environment offering opportunities for clients and carers to come and participate in a range of activities, enjoy the company of others and benefit from the relaxing and spacious environment.

Dorset Children's Foundation

This is an independent local charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with disabilities living within our community.

Their aim is to provide children and their families with a wide range of support including accessible activities, disability equipment, therapies, support groups and counselling.

100% of donations benefit the children. They offer practical rather than medical support.

Hope for food

This is a charity, run entirely by volunteers, that assists in the Bournemouth area with not only food, but with soup kitchens, washing and shower facilities and daily essentials.

Their aim is to help those homeless or living in poverty, by providing fresh food and hampers of food, good quality clothing, bedding and household goods, where needed. They aim to preserve the dignity of those they help and to treat everyone with the utmost respect, without judgement.  Currently they provide about 140-150 food parcels for families and individuals, although the numbers are rising steadily.

November 2018 - We welcome our newest charity  - the Forest Holme Hospice.

The Hospice is part of Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and cares for people with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. The hospice also supports the family members, friends and carers during the illness and bereavement.

Forest Holme was suggested by one of our members whose husband was so lovingly cared for by them. He was a great supporter of Wessex Chorus and from November 2018 we are pleased to Have Forest Holme as our nominated Charity; we will be fundraising for them for the next two years. We were delighted to be able to visit them and were warmly welcomed by the staff. The Hospice needs to raise £850,000 per year in order to keep running - a big task!

SOME OF OUR FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES

In our 10th Anniversary Year we are continuing our exciting partnership with the Bournemouth Blind Society.

We are currently working to raise funds for them and have already performed many concerts, starting with our “Joy filled Summer’s evening” in July 2016.

Our 10th Anniversary Launch concert in 2017 saw the Mayor of Bournemouth present them with a cheque for £3680.20 from us.

OUR CHARITIES SINCE 2008

Our very first charity was the Alzheimer’s Society – which offers support to people with dementia and their carers.

Our second was Children’s Wish Bournemouth – granting wishes to children with life threatening illnesses. Their aim is to bring a bit of magic and special memories at a difficult time in a child’s life.

Our third was the Youth Cancer Trust – a charity providing support and free activity holidays for young people diagnosed and living with any malignant disease.

Later on we raised funds for Help & Care Bournemouth, then the Bournemouth Blind Society and Forest Holme.
